Joseph Shanklin Elementary School is committed to offering a challenging and supportive school program for all of our pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students. Our continuing goal is to prepare students with the vital knowledge and skills they will need for success, while at the same time encouraging creativity, curiosity, and a life-long appreciation for learning.
The academic program at Joseph Shanklin reflects state curricular frameworks as well as district adopted standards in the core curricular areas of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. We are also implementing both the visual and performing arts standards and the physical education/ health standards through specialized instruction by credentialed teachers in those areas.
We believe learning is a journey. Students progress through their journey at different paces. The districtwide MAP testing program is one measure that we use at JSES to gauge the progress of our students in their journey. In addition to the MAP tests, teachers use a variety of other assessment tools in the classroom, including reading benchmark tests, pre and post assessments, and student goal setting notebooks. The results from these assessments are used to differentiate the instruction for individual students to ensure we meet them where they are and guide them forward in their learning.
Character education is a high priority at JSES. We will begin full implementation of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids based on the work of the late Dr. Stephen Covey. As a Leader In Me School, JSES staff and students will incorporate the 7 Habits into all aspects of our lives. In addition, our school uses the LEAD program to teach and reinforce expected behaviors at school. LEAD focuses on leadership, excellence, accountability, and determination. All traits that are needed to be the best learning community we can be.
We are deeply proud of the partnerships we have with our JSES Families and our community. The commitment of our community to work together to support and enhance the learning experience of ALL students is evident when you visit our school. Our Parent Teacher Organization plays a vital role in this partnership. Join today if you are not a member!
We look forward to working in partnership with you to support our students in their journey as learners. If you have questions about our school, please feel free to contact us through e-mail, phone, or in person. Have a wonderful year!
